How To Use Social Media To Get Hired (By Us)

It’s back to school time which can only mean one thing… we’re on the hunt for INTERNS! That’s right we are currently looking for the best digital marketing interns Boston has to offer! But before you blast off an email telling us how amazing you are, we wanted to give you a couple of tips on how you can utilize social media to impress your future boss and, hopefully, get hired!

1. Connect with the companies you want to work for. Chances are, the companies that you are interested in have a social presence. Whether you have to follow, Like or subscribe, keep in touch with would-be employers. Not only does this provide a great way to find out if/when they are hiring, it should also give you a better understanding of company interests and culture. When it comes to the interview process the more you know about what’s going on with a potential employer the better.

2. Remember that the companies you want to work for will be checking up on you as well. Businesses are now using social media to recruit candidates but they are also checking to see how people conduct themselves in the digital world. In a study conducted last year, over 70% of employers admitted to searching the social networking profiles of job applicants for signs of bad behavior. What may seem alarming to one employer may be viewed as innocuous by another, to be on the safe side asses all content that you share online and if you’re unsure keep it private.

3. Be social. There’s not much point in applying for a social media position if you don’t know how to use social networks. Even for other types of jobs, knowledge of how to use social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook to connect with consumers or other businesses is a skill set that is very much in demand. The best way to prove to employers that you “get social” is to show them how you personally use it. Remember to include your Twitter handle, Tumblr profile, LinkedIn account and any other important link along with your resume. You may even want to consider making it really easy for people to find the digital you by using a profile aggregator like Flavors.me.

4. Be proactive. Don’t wait until there is an opening for your dream job before you connect with a company. Get on their radar early by sharing or commenting on their content. (We all know that ReTweeting is the ultimate form of flattery!) If you really want to stand out try sending them relevant content to show that you are thinking about them and to highlight that you have similar interests. Don’t be scared to share content that you may have created. How will people know how awesome you are unless you tell them?

5. Be creative. Forget resumes and cover letters, if you really want to stand out do something original which highlights your skill set and personality. In the last year (thanks to a slump in the job market) more job seekers have been pushing the boundaries in a bid to get noticed. From clever stunts with Google Adwords to cover letters using the power of song, those who dare to be different will usually succeed.

Whether you choose to take our advise or not you are now free to knock our socks off and apply to our fall Digital Marketing Internship! Please send cover letters (musical or otherwise), resumes and bribes to beth@antleragency.com.
